Öckerö municipality in
Sweden is situated on the West Coast, close to Gothenburg. The municipality
includes ten islands on which Öckerö is the main island.
The islands provide unique possibilities for outdoor activities.
Commercial fishing is an important industry in Öckerö.
But fishing vessels not only create jobs, they also produce a number
of waste products such as water mixed with oil, fish processing
waste and sewage from on board toilets.
To protect the surroundings the municipality decided to build an
environmental collections plant. The plant should include a waste
reception facility and treatment plants for processing the fishing
fleet’s waste.
Öckerö municipality turned to us at AquaTeq with the
project to design and construct the waste reception facility. The
result is a facility with three sections, one for each kind of waste.
A card with a magnetic strip allows authorised personnel to access
the facility. The treatment of the waste is later processed at the
municipalities´ treatment plants. The ships can even fill
their drinking water tanks at the waste reception facility.
For Öckerö municipality, the facility means that an important
industry has the opportunity to develop in an environmentally appropriate
way.
At the annual meeting of the Swedish Association for Water in the
spring of 2005, the facility was awarded an environmental prize
established by the pump manufacturer ITT Flygt.
We at AquaTeq are pleased for having the opportunity to design
and construct the new waste reception facility.
